Hush

By slow degree, approaching sunset leaches summer’s hot hues.
Moment by untracked moment, shadows take the corners of my vision.
Evening catches me on the porch.

The settling air vibrates with cicadas’ metallic messages, hypnotic and harmonious.
Twilight bats scribe their
Tattered signatures against the silvering sky.

In the disappearing light, two daredevil dragonflies
Dogfight between the willow branches, and disappear
As the slicing horns of the waxing crescent moon
Claim victory over the coming night.
